The Ohio Valley Catfishing Federation was created to promote Catfish
conservation throughout the Ohio River valley. Vast stretches of the
Ohio River and smaller fisheries that are fed by the Ohio are open
to commercial fishing. We do not intend to outlaw commercial
fishing; our focus is to push for tougher regulations for Catfish on
the states that do allow commercial fishing. Our trophy Catfish populations
are in danger due to the actions of multiple state agencies that do
not recognize Catfish as a Sport Fish. Without a Sport Fish
designation, it has proven difficult to convince state agencies to
impose stronger and smarter regulations. Trophy Catfish are being
removed along the Ohio River primarily for purposes other than human
consumption. With the number of states that are allowing these fish
to be over harvested with little or no regulations, many fisheries
along the Ohio valley will not be able to maintain a healthy
population of Trophy Catfish long term. Catfishing is the fastest
growing type of Sport Fishing in the Nation. With growing popularity
comes more demand as well. As a result, a high percentage of
commercial catches are transported to Pay Ponds. These
establishments are the number one reason that so many Trophy sized
fish are removed from our natural waterways. While we do not wish to
put anyone out of business, better regulations on both sides will
insure a healthy population of Trophy fish that our families and
friends can enjoy for generations to come. OVCF is intended to be
another meeting point where like minded Anglers can organize, and
pressure officials in their respective states. The time is now to
make our voices heard, and protect the species we all love to
pursue. Home |
